The Cruising Instructor course aims to prepare candidates to teach practical courses up to Day Skipper level. It focuses on instructional techniques, knowledge, safety, and personal skills, ensuring a high standard of teaching and learning. The course typically runs over five days for sailing and four days for motor cruising, with a student-to-instructor ratio of 4:1 to ensure personalized attention and detailed instruction.

Following is an example of how a typical course week might unfold:

  • Teaching Methodologies Learn how to effectively teach sailing concepts, both theoretical and practical, to students.
  • Assessment Skills Gain the ability to assess students’ skills, provide constructive feedback, and tailor teaching approaches to individual learning needs.
  • Safety Procedures Understand the importance of safety in sailing, including emergency procedures, safety equipment, and risk assessment.
  • Personal Sailing Skills Even though the course assumes a high level of personal sailing competence, there’s a focus on refining these skills to a standard where you can competently demonstrate and instruct them.
  • Planning Skills Learn how to plan lessons and courses that are engaging, informative, and structured to meet the learning objectives of your students.
  • Feedback and Action Plans Develop the ability to provide day-by-day feedback to students and create action plans for their development.
  • Pre-Course Knowledge Check Complete an online pre-course knowledge check to ensure you’re prepared for the intensive practical training.
  • RYA Teaching Materials Familiarize yourself with RYA teaching materials and standards to ensure your lessons are up to the national standard.
  • RYA Cruising Instructor Certification Upon successful completion of the course, you’ll earn your RYA Cruising Instructor endorsement, enabling you to teach RYA courses up to Day Skipper level.
  • Continuing Professional Development Gain insights into further developing your skills as an instructor, including potential pathways to higher qualifications.
