Following is an example of how a typical course week might unfold:

  • Introduction and Safety Briefing: Start with an overview of the course, safety procedures, and equipment checks.
  • Practical Boat Handling: Learn about boat preparation, launching, and recovery. Begin with low-speed maneuvers including starting and stopping, turning in confined spaces, and using the kill cord.
  • Theory Session: Cover the basics of seamanship, including types of craft, engine checks, and basic navigation principles.
  • Securing to a Buoy and Anchoring: Practice coming alongside a buoy, picking up a mooring, and anchoring.
  • Man Overboard Recovery: Practice the essential skill of recovering a person from the water safely.
  • High-Speed Handling: Learn about planning speeds, trimming the boat, and executing high-speed turns safely.
  • Pilotage and Navigation: Apply basic navigation techniques for pilotage in local waters, understanding buoys and marks, and planning a short passage.
  • Securing to a Buoy and Anchoring: More Practice coming alongside a buoy, picking up a mooring, and anchoring.
  • Collision Regulations and Emergency Procedures: Discuss the rules of the road, how to avoid collisions, and what to do in an emergency situation.
  • Man Overboard Recovery: Second session of Practice the essential skill of recovering a person from the water safely.

The end of the final day is a time for reflection and application of all learned skills during the return journey to the home port. There’s a special emphasis on refining crew coordination, yacht handling, and emergency response. The course concludes with an extensive debriefing, discussing your progress and next steps.
