A cruising guide to the Canary Islands
If you’re looking for an escape from the Cold winter and some warm weather sailing, Fly south for four hours, however, and you’ll find a cruising ground that shares the UK’s time zone but has a perfect climate, wonderful scenery and sensible prices. The Spanish Canary Islands, off the coast of West Africa, are an astonishingly well-kept sailing secret.
The islands offer a spectacular cruising ground, with a varied backdrop. All of the seven main islands – Tenerife, Fuerteventura, Gran Canaria, Lanzarote, La Palma, La Gomera and El Hierro – are within a day’s sail of each other, yet they each have their own unique character and some even have a difference in climate. Most of the marinas and harbours have excellent facilities, improved in recent years by the influx of foreign yachts.
Skippers used to sailing in the Holland will have no problem coping with tides in the Canary Islands: the biggest tidal range is no more than 2.8m and tidal streams rarely get beyond three knots.

Our adventure begins at the bustling heart of Tenerife. The crew, a fine blend of experience and enthusiasm, welcomes us aboard. As the ropes are cast off, we set sail, leaving behind the familiar sights for the promise of the open sea. Our first day is spent getting acquainted with the yacht and our fellow sailors, as we anticipate the wonders that lie ahead.
We wake to the gentle sway of the ocean and set a course for Las Palmas. The journey is as splendid as the destination, with the azure waters providing a backdrop to tales of the sea shared amongst the crew. As Las Palmas appears on the horizon, its vibrant energy beckons us ashore where the evening is spent exploring its lively streets.
The next leg of our journey takes us along Gran Canaria’s rugged coastline to Pasito Blanco. The day is a leisurely sail, allowing us time to master our sea legs and enjoy the coastal scenery. Pasito Blanco greets us with serene beaches, offering a peaceful respite and a night under the stars.
We embark on our crossing back to Tenerife, destined for Las Galletas. This passage, guided by the sun and stars, is a reminder of the timeless nature of sea travel. Las Galletas, with its quaint charm, provides a tranquil haven for the night.
Our voyage then takes an exhilarating turn as we navigate through the acceleration zone. The thrill of the yacht heeling under a fresh breeze is an experience like no other. Our destination, Playa de Santiago, awaits with its untouched beauty and a quiet evening on the shore.
The final stretch to San Sebastián unveils La Gomera in all its glory. The sail to San Sebastián is both reflective and invigorating, as we recount our adventures. San Sebastián, steeped in history, offers a fitting end to our journey, with its blend of old-world charm and modern vibrancy.
